Dobri Dobrev painted "Kalinka and Stanka" with what looks like oil on canvas, and it’s got these soft, rounded shapes and a palette that feels very grounded and earthy, with pops of red and green. Looking at this, I imagine Dobrev standing there, maybe outside, trying to capture the light on their faces. The texture isn’t super thick, but you can see the brushstrokes, especially in the way the scarves are painted; you get a sense of how the paint was applied, almost caressing the surface. I love how the red of Kalinka's scarf just glows against the darker clothes. I think Dobrev was maybe trying to catch something real about these girls, their presence, and how they connect to their world. It reminds me of some folk art I’ve seen, that same desire to capture the everyday and make it meaningful. Artists are always looking, always trying to see what others might miss, and then they put it on canvas for us to see too.
