This "Leporelloalbum with eight photos of Amsterdam" was compiled by Andries Jager, but its creation date remains elusive to us. A book in itself is a potent symbol. Consider how the codex, this very form of bound leaves, superseded the scroll, becoming an emblem of knowledge, preservation, and continuity. Bound together, the pages of this album become a vessel, carrying within it not just images, but the echoes of Amsterdam's past. The sequential unfolding of the Leporello album mirrors the unfolding of memory itself. Each page turned is a step through time, an echo of narratives. Like the cyclical nature of cultural memory, the album's concertina form allows one to traverse its images linearly or circle back, revisiting scenes much like we revisit memories, each time coloured by new experiences. The act of repeatedly opening and closing the album is a ritual, solidifying the connection between past and present, reminding us of the eternal return of human experience.
