Joyce Kozloff created "San Francisco Victorian" using collage and graphite on paper. Immediately, the work presents an all-over pattern of geometric and organic shapes. The pastel palette and soft graphite create a whimsical, decorative quality. The composition invites a semiotic reading where each motif functions as a sign. Stars, moons, flowers, and shells are arranged in a semi-circular pattern which create a visual language reminiscent of architectural ornamentation and textile design. Kozloff merges high art and craft through pattern and decoration as a deliberate strategy to subvert traditional art historical values. Ultimately, the collage challenges fixed meanings by destabilizing the established art world categories and hierarchies and invites ongoing interpretation.
