This is ‘Bericht van de uitgever van de prent met de allegorie op de Vrede van Amiens’, made in 1802 by Evert Maaskamp. It's an announcement by a publisher of a print about the Peace of Amiens, a brief truce in the Napoleonic Wars. The text overflows with allegorical imagery typical of its time. The personification of Peace is depicted as a ‘Daughter of Heaven’, returning to Earth with majesty to heal the wounds of a war-torn humanity. She brings with her an olive branch, a symbol of reconciliation and prosperity. It's as if Peace herself is a feminine entity, descending to offer solace. The announcement speaks to the longing for respite amidst ongoing conflict. The Peace of Amiens was ultimately short-lived, it did represent a moment of hope. This announcement taps into the deep-seated desire for stability, healing, and the promise of a brighter future.
