This is ‘Bridge’, a black ink on paper artwork made by Gan Kolski. Immediately, your eye is drawn to the striking contrast between light and shadow, a characteristic of the medium itself. The bridge is the focal point, its arch framing a stylized landscape. The texture of the bridge contrasts with the smooth sky, creating a dynamic visual experience. Kolski uses the structure of the bridge to create a visual metaphor. The bridge is a symbol of connection, yet in this image it isolates. The dark, imposing structure dwarfs the landscape, challenging our perception of space and perspective. The clouds and the shape of the bridge are reflected in the water creating an almost mirror image of the upper portion of the artwork. The bridge acts as a semiotic marker, a signifier of modernity but also perhaps of alienation. It challenges fixed meanings. Art does not have a singular meaning, and it is a site of ongoing interpretation.
