This “Caricature of Two Soldiers” was drawn anonymously, using graphite on paper. The artist has utilized a simple medium to create a stark contrast between the two soldiers, whose material, in this case being the bodies, is not the same. The thin soldier uses the weight of his weapon to keep himself upright, in contrast to his companion. The work involves traditional drawing techniques, where the artist skillfully used lines and shading to depict the figures and their interaction, hinting at social dynamics within the military. However, unlike the laborious and technical process of painting, drawing offers immediacy and accessibility, making it a potent tool for social commentary. In this work, the artist cleverly uses caricature to underscore a difference in social position. Ultimately, the artist’s choice of medium, technique, and subject matter challenges conventional notions of fine art, blurring the lines between high art and craft.
