Gottfried Mind rendered these two young cats in conflict with watercolor. Look closely at the cat on the right; its wide-open mouth is reminiscent of the 'lion gate' in Mycenae, not in its form but its meaning: a symbol of untamed ferocity. This posture and its implied symbolic force have ancient roots. Consider the Archaic Greek Gorgon masks, used to ward off evil spirits with bared teeth and a wide, monstrous mouth. The mask's grimace, intended to frighten away malevolence, finds a muted echo in the cat's posture. We see a transference of protective power, now distilled into a domestic setting. Though seemingly distanced from such primal displays of power, this image taps into the same reservoir of human emotions. We can think of the psychological concept of catharsis, wherein the acting out of aggression helps one to release uncomfortable tension. The image is not merely of clashing felines, but of the cyclical, non-linear progression of symbols that evolve, adapt, and resurface across millennia.
