Anthonie Waterloo created this etching, "Slapende figuren in een landschap," or "Sleeping Figures in a Landscape" in the 17th Century. During this period, the Dutch Golden Age, landscape art became a popular way to express national identity and pride in the land. Waterloo was one of the foremost artists of this movement. The etching shows figures sleeping peacefully by a road surrounded by a lush, fertile landscape. In this historical context, the image might subtly reflect the relative peace the Netherlands experienced during that time in its history. We know that landscape art often served as a kind of cultural mirror, reflecting the values and experiences of the society that produced it. Waterloo seems to be suggesting that there is a deep, perhaps spiritual, connection between the people and the land. The sleeping figures almost blend into the landscape, as though the earth itself has embraced them. This etching encourages us to consider how our surroundings shape our lives and perceptions.
