This Untitled work was made by Vilen Barsky, using ink, sometime before 2012. Look at how the ink bleeds and pools, it’s like Barsky wasn’t so much drawing as gently coaxing an image out of the void. It makes you think about artmaking as a process of discovery. The shades of grey create a ghostly presence on the paper. The ink is diluted in places, creating these soft, hazy areas, and then intensely concentrated in others, forming a stark, almost menacing outline. Look at the upper section, the way the ink seems to run and drip, it creates this sense of movement, like the image is in a constant state of becoming. This feels similar to the work of someone like Victor Brauner, someone who isn’t afraid to delve into the depths of the subconscious. It reminds us that art isn’t about answers, but about embracing questions.
