This is an engraving of the General Armament decoration in Kadijksplein, made in 1795 by an anonymous artist. Here, we see classical allegories intertwined with symbols of revolution. The central figure under the arch, possibly a representation of liberty, echoes the classical ideal of triumphant virtue. The eye atop the structure, reminiscent of ancient Egyptian and later Masonic symbolism, suggests enlightenment and vigilance, yet it has been reborn, here witnessing a time of revolution. This symbolism can be found in various forms across centuries. The emotional power of such symbols lies in their capacity to evoke collective memories and aspirations. The enlightened eye, a potent emblem of vigilance and awareness, transcends temporal boundaries, evolving and adapting through various cultural and historical milieus. It serves as a reminder of humanity's perpetual quest for enlightenment, resurfacing and reinventing itself in response to changing societal needs.
