Julie de Graag made this watercolor of a chestnut leaf, likely from observation, or perhaps from memory. I can almost imagine the artist outside in the fall, carefully studying each leaf with its symmetrical form and radial pattern. I love the dark wash of the background, and the mottled quality of the paper shining through. It gives a sense of depth and texture which contrasts with the flatness of the leaf. The choice of color tells a story of seasonal transformation and decay. The yellows and browns evoke the crispness of autumn air. But the veins of green suggest the ghost of life that once ran through this leaf. De Graag's work reminds me of other artists who dedicated their life to capturing the subtle beauty of nature. It is as if she is saying: 'Look closely at what is around you. There is beauty in the ordinary'. It reminds us that painting is really about seeing, and feeling, and being present in the world.
