Marie Henriques made this watercolour of the painter Tom Petersen sitting in a veranda. I like how Henriques has handled the light. It streams in from the veranda, casting a bright glow that softens the edges of everything it touches. The colours feel muted and dreamy, as if she captured a fleeting moment in time. I wonder if Henriques felt a connection to Vilhelm Hammershøi. There's a similar quietness, an interest in capturing interior spaces with figures absorbed in their own thoughts. But unlike Hammershøi's cool, sparse interiors, Henriques fills the space with gentle patterns and a sense of warmth. Look at the way she suggests the wallpaper, it's not overly detailed, just enough to give you a sense of the room’s character. It reminds me that painting isn't about perfect representation, it’s about feeling and intuition. It's about creating a world that invites the viewer in and allows them to linger.
