#6 1992

Editor: Here we have Sean Scully's "#6", from the Tate collection. It's a small work of stacked rectangles in earthy tones. It gives me a feeling of solemnity, like a quiet cityscape. What do you make of it? Curator: It whispers, doesn't it? I see a sort of architectural underpinning, but also something more raw and emotional. Notice how the blocks don't quite align, like fractured memories or the precarious nature of our own constructions. Do you feel a push and pull between order and chaos? Editor: I do, now that you mention it! The colors also seem to fight for dominance. Curator: Exactly! Perhaps Scully is showing us that even in simplicity, there's a constant dance of opposing forces. It’s like life, really. Editor: I never would have looked at it that way initially.
