Byron Dingman made this beaded bag, and the process of making something like this, one bead at a time, suggests a patience, a kind of devotional labor. The beads are tiny, each one a little world of reflected light. Up close, you see how the colors shift and shimmer; the roses aren’t just red, they’re a mix of reds, pinks, and even purples. The background, too, is a field of grays and blues that give the flowers a misty, dreamlike quality. The texture is complex, you want to touch it, imagine how each bead feels. Looking at this, I'm reminded of the pointillist painters like Seurat, who also built up images from tiny dots of color, but here, the effect is even more tactile, more intimate. This bag, with its soft palette and handmade feel, speaks to the power of art to transform the everyday into something extraordinary.
