Editor: This is Jean Morin’s portrait of Antoine Vitre. I’m struck by the contrast between the detailed rendering of Vitre himself and the rougher texture of the background. What can you tell me about the process and materials used here? Curator: Considering the socio-economic position of the sitter as Royal Printer, the etching process employed by Morin speaks volumes. What was the relationship between printmaking and the dissemination of knowledge, and how did that influence social change? Editor: So, the printmaking process itself becomes part of the story of Vitre’s role in society? Curator: Precisely. The materiality of the print connects directly to the subject’s profession and its impact. It makes you think about labor, doesn't it? Editor: I never considered it that way before. Thanks for the perspective! Curator: My pleasure. Considering the material conditions, we can start to appreciate the portrait in a new light.
