This poster for "House II" by Robert Sammelin, I am imagining it being screen printed with thick layers of ink, each color carefully laid down to build this wild scene. I’m thinking about the artist and the images they were thinking of: the low-budget horror movie, the tropes, and the desire to pay tribute. The composition has that classic movie poster hierarchy: the heroes at the bottom, rendered with clean lines and brave expressions, gazing up to face the villains looming above them. The skull in the middle, glowing and vibrant, is a symbol of intrigue and an object of desire. To me, it looks like a metaphor for a portal. This poster really nails what it feels like to be a kid in a video store, searching the shelves for the perfect scary movie. Each artist is in a conversation with everything they have ever seen, heard, or felt, and it's exciting to imagine how the conversation continues to morph and shift as they create new works.
