Here's a drawing, an outline of the female image by Hryhorii Havrylenko. With what, I wonder? Pencil? Ink? A very light touch. Look at how Havrylenko has distilled a face into the barest, most essential lines. There's something deeply satisfying about this process, as if he's trying to capture the very essence of form. The texture of the paper plays a big role here, doesn't it? The slight roughness underneath the delicate lines. It is not a blank canvas. There is something written at the bottom of the page that disrupts the simple image. The line that makes the nose is so simple, barely there. It manages to convey so much with so little, like a whispered secret. This reminds me of Giacometti, how he could evoke a whole world with just a few strokes. There's a sense of something unfinished, inviting us to complete the image in our minds.
