About this artwork
This small photograph shows a sleeping baby in a pram, and was probably taken in France by Delizy. It's this kind of sepia tone that makes you think of old family albums, doesn't it? There's a real softness to the whole thing. The light in this photograph is soft and dreamy; it's almost as if the photographer was trying to capture the innocence of the baby. The texture of the wicker pram is amazing, like a little woven nest. The contrast between that woven texture and the smooth skin of the baby is interesting. The way the baby is posed, so peaceful and unaware of the world, reminds me of some of the paintings of sleeping children by the American artist Mary Cassatt. Both artists are so good at capturing the vulnerability and tenderness of childhood. And like Cassatt, Delizy invites us to see the world through the eyes of innocence and simplicity.
