This photograph of the Nicolaaskerk in Wijhe was created sometime in the past by an anonymous artist using photographic means. I find the limited tonal range so interesting, the photograph is all browns and creams. It speaks to the way the artist is seeing. There is not a lot of heavy contrast. The whole image seems to almost melt. Look closely at the way the light pours in from behind the altar. It’s a total wash of light. I think the artist was more interested in the way light moves through space than in capturing every little detail of the architecture. It makes me think of James Turrell, how he uses light as a material. This photograph feels like a meditation. It’s not about showing us something new, but about helping us see something familiar in a new way.
