Dirk Maas created this drawing of a riding lesson in a park with graphite. The monochromatic drawing, although simple, shows a detailed composition of figures, animals and the carriage, evoking a sense of an animated elegance. The composition reveals much about the social status of the people. The figures and horses near the carriage suggest the elite class, with their posture and well-maintained horses. This contrasts with the more relaxed scene in the lower-left, with dogs playing. The use of line and space invites us to contemplate the structured activities of the wealthy in contrast to nature. The materiality of graphite on paper also adds to the drawing's impact. The softness of the lines and subtle shading create a sense of depth and atmosphere. It not only captures a historical moment but also invites reflection on social dynamics and artistic representation.
