David Young Cameron made this etching called 'The North Porch, Harfleur' without a specified date. Look closely, and you'll notice the print has a whole range of marks, from light to dark, from blurry to sharp. The texture in this print is amazing. Can you see the tiny lines and dots that create the image? It's like the artist is building the scene from scratch, one tiny mark at a time. See the solid darkness of the doorway, set against the grey stone of the entrance. It is as if the darkness is pushing out from the interior, encroaching upon the stone. I love the way the artist uses line to show the crumbling details of the architecture, giving the image a feeling of age and history. That door! It looks like it's inviting you into another world, doesn't it? It reminds me of Piranesi and his cavernous etchings. And you know, art is like that, a constant conversation across time and space. It's never really finished, always open to new interpretations.
