George Grosz made this drawing, Studies of a Male Nude, with graphite on paper. Look at the vulnerability of the male figure, how Grosz uses line to create a figure that feels both present and fragmented. It’s all in the process, isn’t it? The texture is raw, exposed. The lines are restless, searching, like he's trying to pin something down but it keeps moving. The face of the figure seems burdened, and the lines around the eyes and mouth are heavy with a kind of world-weariness. Notice the stray marks floating around the figure, lines that seem to almost dance around him, heightening the sense of unease. I see echoes of Egon Schiele here, that same raw, unvarnished look at the human form. There’s nothing sentimental here, just a clear-eyed look at the human condition. And really, isn’t that what art is all about? Asking questions, not giving answers.
