This engraving, made by Reinier van Persijn around 1655, presents a scene laden with symbolism and historical resonance. Dominating the image is a figure crowned with laurel, a classical allusion to emperors and victors, signifying power and authority. But observe the fox at the foot of the steps. In contrast to the lion, the traditional symbol of strength and courage, the fox is a far more ambivalent symbol. It is frequently associated with cunning, trickery, and moral ambiguity, concepts that stretch back to Aesop's fables and the medieval bestiaries. The inclusion of this motif reveals a layer of complexity, questioning the nature of leadership and power. It is a subtle acknowledgement of the darker aspects of governance, where strategy and deception often play a role. These symbols have reappeared throughout history, evolving in their meaning. Their recurrence invites us to consider the cyclical nature of power, ambition, and the shadow that often accompanies them.
