Robert Frank, who passed away not so long ago, made this photographic contact sheet called "Trip with father--Milan no number," sometime during his life. It's like a page from a sketchbook, a collection of moments captured during a trip with his father. Each frame feels like a different way of seeing Milan, from the grand architecture to intimate street scenes. I imagine Frank wandering around with his camera, trying to find the right angle, the perfect light. I wonder what it was like to travel with his father. What were they talking about? Did they argue about where to go, what to see? Maybe it was a way for them to connect. You see the repetition of architectural elements like archways and spires, all pointing upwards. The human element—the people in the street, and a portrait of a man, perhaps the father—adds a layer of emotion. I like the way the light and shadow fall across the buildings, giving them a sense of depth and texture. It makes me think of other photographers like Walker Evans, who also captured the everyday beauty of urban life. The image feels both personal and universal.
