Editor: Here we have "Alix malade," an engraving. There isn't a listed date for the work or the artist, but what strikes me is how theatrical the scene feels, like a still from a play. The composition and staging seems to have very specific gestures. What do you see in this piece? Curator: What immediately jumps out at me is the negotiation of space and power. The man with the key, standing on the steps leading up to the door of what appears to be a fairly imposing house, clearly has a certain authority. What do you make of the figure who stands outside the home? Do you get the sense there's a commentary being made about class or social hierarchy? Editor: I see what you mean. There is something about his pose, one foot forward, like he is ready to leave. Also, he's not dressed as nicely. What is that inscription at the top of the doorway? Curator: That inscription probably indicates the owner. It also shows that access to knowledge was controlled by wealthy European people who commissioned this piece, reinforcing the importance of education and class status in their society. I would be interested to investigate more the meaning of his dress to comment on what might have happened, and the potential role this print might have played as either endorsement of a critique of their status. What could this work be challenging? Editor: It makes me think more critically about narrative now, about who gets to tell these stories, and for what purpose. Thanks for pointing that out! Curator: And for me, your remark about the theatrical quality opens up new lines of inquiry regarding the role of spectacle in the construction of social relations at the time. Thank you!
