This black and white photograph, Untitled Film Still #32, by Cindy Sherman, seems to come from another time. The woman with the cigarette is clearly playing a part. There is a darkness to the photograph that makes her appear vulnerable, almost caught in a moment of solitude and reflection. I can imagine Sherman carefully arranging herself, thinking about every detail. Think of all the female characters we have seen smoking in movies - a common trope. What could the cigarette symbolize here? Is she cool and independent, or just trying to fill a void? I am touched by her melancholic state. Sherman's work is always about artifice and identity. There is an ongoing conversation about how images shape our perceptions of ourselves and each other. It is a deeply personal journey for the artist, but also a universal one.
