Mario Ballocco made this painting, "Sequenze quadrangolari - concetto di distorsione", and it looks like he was having a lot of fun playing with lines, colors, and how they mess with your eyes. There's something hypnotic about the way the diagonal stripes create these squares within squares, almost like looking down a never ending tunnel. The surface looks smooth, so I'm guessing he used thin layers of paint to get those clean lines. The way the colors are so close in value, but still distinct, makes you really focus. That tiny square in the center is like a little secret, drawing you in to decode the whole thing. It reminds me a bit of Bridget Riley's op art, where she used simple shapes to create these intense visual experiences. It's like Ballocco is saying, hey, art can be a puzzle, a game, a conversation, not just a pretty picture.
