With the top hat and suit, he looks like a man of status, which is very different from some of his paintings of modern life. Does that suggest something about Fantin-Latour’s view of Manet or how he wanted him to be perceived? Curator: Exactly! It reflects Fantin-Latour’s perception and the image-making that occurs between artists. They were close but had significant artistic disagreements, particularly about the direction of Realism and the role of the avant-garde. Considering the artistic and social circles they moved in, who would have viewed this portrait, and how might that impact our interpretation of it today? Editor: I hadn’t considered that. Knowing that they were fellow artists changes how I see it. Perhaps it's Fantin-Latour's attempt to solidify Manet’s place within a certain artistic and social sphere, a deliberate crafting of his public image. Curator: Precisely. It's about control and placement. Images don’t simply represent; they actively do things in the world. Considering that, how might this drawing operate differently within Manet's own trajectory compared to Fantin-Latour’s? Editor: That's fascinating! I am going to remember to ask that question every time I am trying to understand the image’s relation to the art world and the audience. Thank you.
