Enzo Cucchi created "Puzzano" as a ceramic relief which presents us with a striking interplay of sculptural form and pictorial narrative. The relief is dominated by its tactile, three-dimensional border of a strange bone-like material, framing a stark, dreamlike landscape in monochrome with stark accents. The landscape itself is surreal, featuring a wild boar marked with a patch of striking red, set against a backdrop with a figure hanging from a gallows. This scene is rendered with loose brushstrokes, giving a sense of spontaneity. Cucchi blurs the boundaries between painting and sculpture to create a powerful tension. The rough, almost primal quality of the ceramic contrasts with the more refined elements of the painted scene. We are left to question fixed meanings and invite a reinterpretation of how art engages with representation.
