This gunlock on a dummy breech of a 30-pounder cannon was made by Rijkswerf Amsterdam, using wood and metal. The dummy breech, made from wood, is curved and polished to give it a smooth feel, which contrasts the metal elements placed on top. The materials used in the artwork, particularly the metal, are closely linked to the Dutch military industry. The smooth wooden base contrasts with the sharp mechanical elements of the gunlock. These components are clearly defined, emphasizing their function and industrial origins. What really draws my attention is the amount of labor involved in producing the gunlock on a dummy breech. Skilled workers, and perhaps the repetitive manufacturing processes were essential in achieving such a high level of precision, and in the production of military equipment at the time. This piece, and its materials, forces us to consider the complex relationship between craft, industry, labor, and military production. We are challenged to examine how these elements come together to create an object that reflects both functional and cultural values.
