Curatorial notes

Willem Roelofs created this delicate pencil drawing, “Trees and a House on a Waterfront,” capturing a serene waterside scene. Roelofs was a key figure in the Hague School, a group of Dutch artists who sought to move away from the rigid formality of the academy in favor of a more naturalistic and emotional style. This sketch offers a glimpse into the cultural values of the Dutch in the 19th century, who idealized the pastoral landscape as a site of national identity and peacefulness. There is an undeniable intimacy here, between the artist, the land, and the viewer. Notice how the soft graphite lines render the trees, water, and distant house with a gentle touch, suggesting a quiet, almost melancholic mood. Roelofs' focus on the ordinary, the everyday, elevates the scene. The sketch invites us to contemplate our relationship with nature and the simple beauty of the Dutch landscape.
