Hendrik Pola created this drawing of "Gezicht op Kasteel Batenburg" with pen in grey ink, in 1718. Pola's lifetime coincided with the Dutch Golden Age, a period of great wealth and cultural achievement in the Netherlands. Looking at this image, one might consider the construction of the castle as a symbol of power, reflecting the social hierarchy of the time. The figure on horseback could be seen to represent the landowning class, and the fisherman as a member of the working class. The castle stands as a physical barrier, a monument to historical separation. Yet, there is also an undeniable beauty in the image, with the soft grey tones and the reflection of the castle in the water. The drawing, with its serene depiction of daily life around the castle, reminds us of the complex interplay between power, labor, and the aesthetic appreciation of the world around us.
