Curator: This engraving, housed here at the Harvard Art Museums, is a portrait of Jean Thierry by Henri Simon Thomassin. Editor: Oh, what a striking image! The texture jumps out at me—the wig practically begs to be touched. There’s a real sense of presence here. Curator: Thomassin captured Thierry, who was a sculptor for the Kings of France and Spain, in the trappings of his profession and station. Note the tools in his hand. Editor: Yes, and the classical statue just beyond his shoulder. It gives context to his skill, though it also feels a bit like he’s trying a bit too hard to impress. Curator: Perhaps. These commissioned portraits were strategic, to be sure. They played a role in shaping artistic legacy and public perception. Editor: Ultimately, it's a fascinating dance between the artist's intent and my own projections, filtered across centuries. What a thought!
