Joakim Skovgaard made this etching of Adam and Eve tempted by the serpent at the turn of the 20th century. It’s all in delicate black lines on a bright white surface, giving it a kind of raw, innocent feel, even though the subject matter is anything but. I bet Skovgaard was thinking about the old masters when he made this. You know, reflecting on that whole tradition while trying to make it his own. I imagine him sketching away, trying to capture the drama of the moment but also the vulnerability of Adam and Eve. Look at the trees in the background. You can almost feel the breeze rustling through the leaves and the grass at their feet. It's so delicately rendered. Ultimately, artists are always riffing off each other, taking ideas and running with them. And as viewers, we get to be part of that conversation, bringing our own interpretations to the table.
