Curatorial notes

Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo painted “The Madonna and Child with the Infant St John the Baptist” sometime in the 18th century. It’s a depiction of maternal love, but also of a destiny that none of these figures can escape. Tiepolo came from a family of artists, and his paintings often reflected the social structures of his time. We see Mary, the mother, rendered with a tender sorrow, as if she already knows the fate of her child. The infant John looks on with an almost eerie understanding. The cross he carries is a stark reminder of the future sacrifice. In 18th century Venice, the church was a powerful force, shaping ideas about morality, gender, and power. Tiepolo offers a vision that’s both intimate and grand, personal and political. What does it mean to be a mother, a son, a saint, when your path is predetermined? This painting invites us to reflect on the weight of expectations, both divine and societal, and the quiet moments of humanity within them.
