Alfonso Umana’s "Bedspread" is a drawing on paper that imagines, rather than replicates, a textile. The repeated motifs are carefully rendered in colored pencil, making the process transparent. There’s a real intimacy to this work, like you’re looking at something private. I find myself drawn to the gray background. It’s not a flat wash, but a field of tiny, individual strokes. This gives the piece a textured, almost woven quality, which contradicts its medium. The pink roses and the yellow and red crosses, these splashes of color, pop against the subdued ground, but they don't dominate it. It makes me think of Hilma af Klint, with her own meticulous patterns and use of a quiet but powerful palette. Both artists demonstrate a kind of artmaking that embraces repetition and imperfection, and the idea that beauty can be found in the smallest details. What do you think?
