“Backplate” is a 16th century breastplate made by German armorer Hans Prunner. This example of a backplate, or cuirass, is crafted from steel and demonstrates the precision and skill of Renaissance armor making. Prunner is known for his detailed work and mastery of metal, and this piece showcases his high-quality craftsmanship. The backplate is currently part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection in New York.
