Cornelis Vreedenburgh made this sketch of a boat moored to a pier sometime in his lifetime with graphite on paper. Can you imagine Vreedenburgh sitting there, with his sketchbook, trying to get all the details down? Look at these energetic marks! I think he was trying to capture the light reflecting off the water and the movement of the boat. The lines are so light and quick, here, there. I think it shows how artists are always observing and responding to the world around them, trying to find new ways to see and represent it. I always find it inspiring to see how artists like Vreedenburgh embrace the imperfections and uncertainties of the creative process. Maybe it encourages us to appreciate the beauty and complexity of the world.
