Curatorial notes
Here's a photograph of Zuidoostzijde van Kasteel Neubourg te Gulpen, made by an anonymous photographer. Look at the colour, that sepia tone. It gives the whole image a nostalgic feel, doesn't it? Like a memory fading at the edges. I'm really drawn to the way the light falls on the stone. The texture is amazing; you can almost feel the roughness of the walls, the way the climbing plants softens them, and the smooth, cold surface of the windows. Look at the top left corner, how the tower seems to reach into the sky, it is full of character. The light and shadow there really make the building come alive. This image reminds me of the work of Eugène Atget. Both artists capture a sense of place, a moment in time, with a quiet, unassuming eye. It's like they're saying, "Here it is, take a look," and then leaving us to draw our own conclusions. Art is about possibilities, not answers, right?
