This reward poster, made by F. Criep in 1623, would have been plastered around The Hague. It promises money and impunity to anyone who delivers up a list of conspirators against Prince Maurits. The conspirators are named as Henrick Daniëlsz Statius, Adriaen Adriaensz van Dijck, Cornelis Gesteranus, and Gerardt Velsius. The reward was offered “so that the Prince's Court is informed by each and everyone”, and makes clear that anyone found to be housing or helping the named men will be punished severely. These kinds of notices are fascinating sources for social historians, as they highlight the intersection of crime, governance and popular attitudes, and can be supplemented by archival research into the individuals named. They tell us a great deal about the social structures of the time.
