This is a photograph, ‘Gezicht op een waterweg met bomen op de oever’, created by Hildegard Lehnert, a German photographer, sometime between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is a modest-sized image, likely made using the gelatin silver process, which by that point, was the dominant technique for photographic prints. The gelatin silver print was created through a series of labor-intensive steps: a negative would have been exposed to light-sensitive paper, then developed and fixed to create a positive image. In Lehnert's time, photography had become relatively democratized, but the darkroom work still demanded considerable skill. The tonal range and clarity seen here suggest Lehnert was an accomplished practitioner. Consider how the mass production of photographic materials intersects with an individual’s artistic vision. Lehnert utilized an industrial product to capture a serene, almost romantic scene. This reminds us that even in a world increasingly shaped by industrialization, the desire to represent and find beauty in the natural world persists. It also suggests that the distinctions between technology and art, between the mass-produced and the unique, are never quite as clear-cut as we might think.
