This is Sam Francis’ Self-Portrait, a print on paper where Francis takes mark-making to its most expressive potential. The piece has this incredible tactile quality, doesn't it? It's all in the surface. You can almost feel the scratch of the crayon or charcoal against the paper. It's immediate, raw and honest. The marks around the face feel like they've been put down quickly and intentionally. Notice that hard, dark line running down the left side of the face? It’s like a veil, or perhaps a tear, that emphasizes the vulnerability and intensity of the gaze. There’s something of Picasso here, especially in the directness and the way the form is simplified, but Francis makes it all his own with that restless, searching line. The portrait feels like an ongoing investigation. It's this great reminder that art isn’t about perfection; it’s about the process, the exploration, the conversation.
