This preface, crafted by Kitagawa Utamaro, dates back to the late 18th century, a time when Japan’s Edo period was flourishing. Though the script may appear opaque, the text offers insight into the cultural milieu that shaped Utamaro’s art. During this time, the floating world, or ukiyo, became a vibrant part of urban culture. Here we see an example of Japanese calligraphy which suggests a reverence for poetry and literature. Yet, the intimate nature of the artwork also mirrors the period's exploration of individual experiences and emotions. As an artist, Utamaro navigated a society marked by strict social hierarchies, and his work often found itself at odds with the authorities. His woodblock prints and paintings, which often depicted courtesans and actors, challenged traditional artistic norms. Utamaro captured the beauty and transience of everyday life. These glimpses of the floating world reflect a delicate balance between pleasure and melancholy.
