This is Johann Friedrich Stiehm’s stereoscopic photograph "Gezicht op de burcht van Neurenberg." The composition is arranged in a way that emphasizes layers of space. Note how the bridge in the foreground leads the eye towards the buildings. The castle, situated on elevated ground, appears to float ethereally. Stiehm captured the scene with a soft focus which adds to the romantic feel. What we are seeing here is the interplay between reality and representation that was common to the photographic medium in the nineteenth century. By using a stereoscopic technique, Stiehm engages with the idea of perceived depth, creating an almost tangible experience for the viewer. This invites us to consider the cultural significance of the site, as well as the emotional and perceptual experience.
