This photograph, titled 'Automobiel op een bergweg langs de Tinée in de Alpes-Maritimes', by Delizy captures a moment in time, a car on a mountain road. It's all in sepia, that in-between colour, giving a soft glow, yet full of contrasts. What strikes me most is the texture. The rocks are so rugged, like a painting with thick impasto. You can almost feel the roughness, the weight of the mountains towering over the road. Then there’s that dark opening in the rock, leading to who knows where, a void that draws you in. Look at the details, how the light catches the edges, creating a sense of depth. It’s like the artist is sculpting with light, revealing the hidden forms within the landscape. It reminds me a bit of the early landscape photography of Gustave Le Gray, that same attention to detail and play of light and shadow. Like Le Gray, Delizy presents us with a moment of visual ambiguity, and invites us to find our own way within the work.
