Jack Davis, the renowned cartoonist from Atlanta, Georgia, created this lively drawing, Georgia Bulldogs and Florida Gators. Davis's style is rooted in the tradition of caricature, exaggerating features for humorous or satirical effect. In this work, Davis playfully taps into the intense rivalry between the University of Georgia and the University of Florida. On one side, we see the menacing Georgia Bulldog, number one, ready for a fight, versus the Florida Gator, holding a bucket of paint, with an orange cap. What is interesting here, and perhaps a little problematic, is the use of alcohol as the object that the bulldog holds to attack the alligator. Davis, who co-founded Mad Magazine, was known for capturing the spirit of American culture through his art. His images both reflect and shape our understanding of sports and regional identity. As we engage with this drawing, we’re invited to reflect on how images can shape our passions and prejudices.
