Eyvind Earle made 'Beneath A Silent Sky' with paint sometime in the 20th century. Look at how Earle divided the sky into a series of horizontal bands, each a slightly different shade, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere. It's like a Rothko, but with mountains! Earle's use of color here feels really considered. The warm reds and oranges of the mountains contrast with the cool blues and purples of the sky and water, creating a sense of visual harmony and balance. The paint application is so smooth and controlled, almost like printmaking or animation cells; maybe that comes from his background in animation. And these cacti are just shapes, but so full of presence and emotion! I think he might have looked at Milton Avery, but the intensity of color is all his own. It's a beautiful, strange painting that invites you to slow down and really look.
