Work and writing table (table en chiffonière) 1755 - 1765

Bernard II van Risenburgh created this work and writing table, or "table en chiffonière," in the 18th century. Its dimensions are 27 x 13-3/4 x 10-5/8 inches. Notice how the marquetry on the top and shelf creates a starburst pattern, drawing the eye inward. The curvilinear cabriole legs add a sense of lightness, contrasting with the solid, dark wood. Silver or gilded bronze mounts punctuate the corners and edges, providing a visual rhythm that emphasizes the table's structure.
