Editor: Here we have "Sun," an engraving created in 1569 by Abraham de Bruyn. The figure emanates a very self-assured stance, a kind of regal energy, but with curious elements. I mean, what’s with the sun-head he’s holding? How do you interpret this work? Curator: The "sun-head" you mention, or Sol as it’s labeled "SOL AOB" on the engraving, and the figure of the king are crucial. The sun has been a potent symbol throughout history. What do you associate with the sun? Editor: Energy, warmth, light, you know, life-giving stuff. Curator: Exactly! And kingship is often associated with the sun: a ruler illuminating and nourishing their people, just as the sun nourishes the Earth. Notice how he carries the sun head as a symbol of authority, a literal embodiment of solar power. Editor: And the lion at his feet? Is that symbolic too? Curator: Yes! Lions are typically associated with royalty, strength, courage. Its presence reinforces the king's dominion and power. It shows that not only he governs the earthly realms, but also the symbolic realms as well, represented by a strong, masculine animal figure like the lion. Editor: It's interesting how the artist used recognizable symbols to talk about power and authority. What I’m wondering, though, is whether this "Sun" really held any kind of authority. I mean, if people looked at this, would they just see another drawing of the sun? Curator: Not necessarily. The beauty of the symbolism used is that they endure across the years. Seeing symbols persist from ancient times provides continuity and relevance. These enduring archetypes resonate through time. Editor: I hadn’t considered it that way. I’ll certainly think more deeply about symbolism in art now.
