This bronze medal, "Hoop op vrede" or "Hope for Peace," was made in 1907 by Hippolyte Le Roy. Look at how the figures emerge from the metal, their forms defined by subtle shifts in relief, a real conversation between depth and surface. I like how the texture gives the impression that the figures aren't just imposed on the surface of the medal, but rather are integral to its very substance. On one side, a female figure extends her hand towards a seated male figure who is kneeling. It's like the artist is suggesting the possibility of peace and reconciliation emerging from the depths of conflict or despair, as the figures are both distinct and intertwined. The medal reminds me a bit of Rodin, also working in France around the same time, grappling with form and emotion. Both artists were interested in ambiguity. The ship at sea on the other side could represent the voyage we must take to find inner peace.
